Deep Time Walk

Deep Time Walk

£5 Join us for a guided walk through Earth's 4.6 billion-year evolutionary history over a distance of 4.6km, where each metre is 1 million years! Limited places available so please book yours in advance via Eventbrite or by calling into the Hwb. Together we will travel back in time to the start of our journey, beginning with the formation of the solar system. We'll then walk forwards in time stopping at various points along the way to listen to a narrative, exploring key events such as the formation of the Moon, the oceans, the origins of life, and mass extinction events such as that of the dinosaurs 66 million years ago, right up to the present day. This Deep Time Walk is an interactive way of grasping the vastness of Earth's 4.6 billion-year history, highlighting how humans have evolved in the blink of a geological eye. It invites participants to view the world differently, explore our deep interrelationship with the more-than-human world, and encourage positive action to address the climate and nature emergencies. Your guide Paul will facilitate the walk using materials provided by the Deep Time Walk Project. The narrative used brings together knowledge and scientific evidence from many disciplines, in what the creators consider to be the mainstream scientific consensus.

🕙 Starts: 10:00am prompt from Hwb y Gors (please arrive 10 minutes before the start)
🚶🏻Length: 4.6km (3 miles) + 0.4km to return to Hwb y Gors. ⌛Walk duration: approx. 3 hours - this will depend on the pace of the group so please allow for the possibility that it may run over a little. ⬆️ Route: we will follow paths through woodland, pasture fields and open moorland. We will start at Hwb y Gors and climb to just beyond the summit of Mynydd Uchaf before returning along a similar route. Participants will need to have a reasonable level of fitness and walking ability. 🚽 Toilets are available at Hwb y Gors. 🌤️ Weather! Walk will be cancelled if the weather is too extreme or likely to make conditions unsafe. 👥 All welcome (age guide: + 14 years). WHAT TO BRING 👟 Footwear suitable for walking on varied surfaces, some areas may be damp and a little muddy if it's been raining. 🧥 Appropriate clothing for the conditions/weather - anyone’s guess but might include a waterproof jacket, sun cream, sun hat, warm clothing etc. 🥤 Drink and snack, we will make several stops along the way but will not be using any café facilities during the walk. 🧠 Most importantly, an “open mind”, ready to take this journey through the evolutionary history of our more than human world.

'Rave on for the Avon'

A tender documentary film that follows a local community’s fight to save their bathing spot in unique, daring ways. Determined to reclaim their waters, local people take on water companies and local authorities in a fight for cleaner, healthier rivers, with a banging soundtrack. “…campaigning never looked so fun and friendly as it does in this joyous documentary about Bristol’s clean water campaigners.” Cath Clarke, Guardian

Post film Discussion

Join us and our invited speakers (Tiff Dew, Community River Officer for Swansea & Neath Port Talbot at West Wales Rivers Trust and Kate McCabe, Urban Foundry) to talk about issues raised by the film and hear about inspiring local projects. Tiff Dew: Community River Officer – Swansea & Neath Port Talbot, West Wales Rivers Trust Tiff has always lived or worked within casting distance of a river and has all too often witnessed the problems our wonderful rivers are subjected to. As a lifelong outdoorsman, he is passionate about developing community projects which involve restoring and protecting fluvial landscapes for future generations to enjoy. Kate McCabe: Kate is passionate about the benefits of being outdoors in good quality green space and enjoys walking, swimming, surfing, cycling and growing food. Kate took part in Dip a Day for Surfers Against Sewage last October to raise awareness of the issues of pollution in our seas and rivers and to encourage more people to take action. She is passionate about community voice and action to make positive changes with a strong belief that social change can happen with the right approach. Her work at Urban Foundry and Natural Resources Wales is focused on the impacts of climate change and how nature-based solutions (also known as green infrastructure) can provide positive ways for communities and businesses to adapt to a changing climate, improve wellbeing, economies and support nature to thrive.
