Welsh Liberal Democrat Leader Jane Dodds to Speak at Hwb y Gors

Welsh Liberal Democrat Leader Jane Dodds to Speak at Hwb y Gors

We’re pleased to announce that Hwb y Gors will host Jane Dodds, Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats, as part of Community Energy Wales’ series of pre‑election events with party leaders. As long-standing members of Community Energy Wales, and as a Community Energy charity ourselves,  we’re proud to offer Hwb y Gors as a venue for this important  conversation. Community Energy Wales recently launched its Community Energy Manifesto for the 2026 Senedd elections, shaped through extensive input from community groups across Wales. The manifesto sets out key policy proposals to strengthen community ownership, transform Wales’ energy system, and tackle the climate and nature emergencies. Jane Dodds has been invited to respond to the manifesto and speak to three core themes:

  1. Her party’s response to the full suite of policy proposals in the CEW manifesto
  2. Plans to address nature and climate breakdown and measures to restore biodiversity
  3. Support for community wealth building, including how government can help communities own and manage their own assets
We are delighted to welcome Jane Dodds to Hwb y Gors, a building that embodies what community investment and local ownership can achieve.

Power Station

Two artist activists install solar panels on every house in their street. Community, vision and a dash of British eccentricity and the result is everyday magic. Funny, heartwarming, a vibrant testament to the power of art in making change. “The lo-fi, handheld cinematography, through which Powell and Edelstyn often directly address the viewer, lends a moving intimacy to their momentous endeavours. From sleeping on the roof for a fundraising challenge to planting a thousand sunflowers, their approach prioritises collective action as much as visual impact… Powell and Edelstyn do not shy away from showing some of the lower points of their campaign… Still, the film is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when we simply talk to our neighbours, and it is heartwarming to see different people, from diverse backgrounds but bound by shared economic struggles, come together to make green energy a reality.” Phuong Le, Guardian

Fashion Reimagined

Director: Becky Hutner 100 min | UK, USA | 2022   Raised off-grid by activist parents, fashion designer Amy Powney has always felt uneasy about the devastating environmental impact of her industry. When she wins the coveted Vogue award for the Best Young Designer of the Year, which comes with a big cash prize, Amy decides to use the money to create a sustainable collection from field to finished garment, and transform her entire business. This film follows her painstaking efforts to produce clothes that do no harm, examining every step of long and winding supply chains and uncovering shocking practices and statistics. “A must watch, not just for the fashion industry, but for everyone who wears clothes.” – Jess Cartner-Morley, Associate Editor (Fashion), The Guardian Amy Powney is widely considered a leader in the UK’s sustainable fashion movement. In just 13 years, she went from sweeping the cutting-room floor at fashion brand Mother of Pearl to taking the helm as its Creative Director. Sustainability has been a life-long passion for Amy and she’s been on a mission for Mother of Pearl to reduce its impact on the planet. Her sustainable collections have been shown at London Fashion Week and Copenhagen Fashion Week and are stocked by prestigious global retailers including Net-a-Porter, Harrods, Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, and Goop. She also designs sustainable collections and homeware for John Lewis. She is the winner of the 2017 BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund and writes the “Ask Amy” column in British Vogue. After 20 years at Mother of Pearl, Amy stepped down in 2025 in order to launch a new contemporary womenswear brand: AKYN with the aim of demonstrating that it is possible to create beautiful, desirable clothes with a transparent supply chain, organic, best practice, natural materials; and a socially-responsible ethos.

Mothers of the Revolution

In 1981 a group of 36 women set off on a 120 mile march from Cardiff to Berkshire to protest against the planned arrival of American nuclear missiles on UK soil.

Karmen Thomas, one of the four friends from Ammanford whose original idea the march was, will join us to share her memories.
