On Saturday 6th June 2026 we unveiled our marvellous mosaic mural… and celebrated The Great Big Green Week with plants, music, dance, green grooves – and snails!

Artist and community mosaic leader Dani Lee and over fifty local people came together eight months ago to start work on a major new artwork for Hwb y Gors. The big reveal was made by former Cwmgors primary school pupil, Gwynne Jones.

Centre Manager Louise Griffiths explained “The mural shows life in Cwmgors when the school first opened and is packed with memories of the community as it was in 1912, made with love by our community in 2026. We want to say a huge thank you to Dani Lee and all our talented and hardworking muralists – we can’t wait for everyone to see their incredible work on public display. We are also very grateful to our funders: National Lottery Community Fund, NPT Heritage Fund and Ashley Family Foundation for helping to make it happen.”

On the day, the café was open, the Klezmer Klub played music and there was a mini exhibition on how the mosaic was created, drawing on the local history of the area. Celebrating The Great Big Green Week, our popular Plant Swap took place featuring the First Welsh Open Snail Racing Championships.

We also saluted the green rooves we’ve installed on several of our buildings onsite as a nod to World Green Roof Day.

And to round off the day, Soul Genic brought the Welsh Valleys Ecstatic Dance party straight to the Hwb main Hall. A unique, high-energy and completely sober night out featuring a cacao ceremony, DJ Frosty, and Sound Journey it was a great chance to dance, unwind and celebrate the joy of community.
